ASTM A234 WP92 Alloy Steel Elbow is a high-performance chromium-molybdenum-tungsten alloy steel butt weld fitting manufactured in accordance with ASTM A234 / ASME SA234 and ASME B16.9 for advanced ultra-supercritical (A-USC) power plant and high-temperature refinery service.
Based on a 9Cr-0.5Mo-1.8W-V alloy system, WP92 alloy steel elbows provide exceptional high-temperature creep strength, oxidation resistance and microstructural stability, making them suitable for the most demanding high-temperature, high-pressure piping systems.
WP92 is one of the most advanced ferritic alloy steel grades available for welded piping components, widely used in main steam systems, hot reheat lines and high-temperature refinery transfer lines operating at temperatures up to approximately 650°C.

Material & Heat Treatment
ASTM A234 WP92 shares the same 9Cr-0.5Mo-1.8W-V alloy system as ASTM A335 P92 seamless pipe and ASTM A182 F92 forgings, which are extensively applied in A-USC power plants and high-temperature industrial projects.

Normalizing: 1040–1080°C
Tempering: 730–800°C
This produces a stable tempered martensitic microstructure suitable for long-term operation in A-USC main steam and hot reheat systems.
Heat treatment parameters are controlled according to ASTM A234, ASME SA234, manufacturing procedures and customer project specifications.

What is the difference between WP92 and WP91?
WP92 and WP91 are both 9Cr alloy steel grades used for high-temperature power plant service.
WP92 is a 9Cr-0.5Mo-1.8W-V alloy with higher tungsten content, providing superior creep strength and allowing higher design stresses compared with WP91 (9Cr-1Mo-V).
WP91 offers better weldability and lower material cost, while WP92 is selected for the most demanding A-USC main steam and hot reheat applications.
Does WP92 require PWHT?
Yes. Welded WP92 piping systems require strict preheating and post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) according to applicable construction codes, qualified welding procedures and project specifications.
Due to the high alloy content, welding procedures for WP92 must be carefully qualified to avoid cracking and ensure long-term creep performance.
What is the maximum service temperature of WP92?
WP92 is designed for advanced high-temperature service and is commonly applied in systems operating up to approximately 650°C.
