Branch Connection

Branch Connection, also referred to as an olet, is a forged piping component designed to provide a reinforced branch connection in high-pressure and high-temperature piping systems. Hongcheng manufactures and supplies branch connections for refinery process piping, power plant main steam and hot reheat piping, high-pressure utility systems and other applications requiring a reinforced branch connection on thick-wall or large-diameter pipe.

Product Overview

Branch Connection, also referred to as an olet, is a forged piping component designed to provide a reinforced branch connection in high-pressure and high-temperature piping systems. Hongcheng manufactures and supplies branch connections for refinery process piping, power plant main steam and hot reheat piping, high-pressure utility systems and other applications requiring a reinforced branch connection on thick-wall or large-diameter pipe.

Branch connections are typically manufactured from materials including ASTM A105, ASTM A350 LF2, ASTM A182 F11, ASTM A182 F22 and ASTM A182 F91. Material selection, forging process and heat treatment are determined according to the applicable material specification, pressure class and project requirements.

Hongcheng supplies branch connections with heat treatment performed in accordance with applicable material specifications and purchaser requirements. Full material traceability, inspection documentation and project-specific technical support are available. Custom wall thickness transitions, end preparations and branch configurations can be supplied according to project drawings and specifications.

Material & Heat Treatment

Branch connections are manufactured from carbon and alloy steels containing Carbon (C), Manganese (Mn), Silicon (Si), Chromium (Cr), Molybdenum (Mo), Vanadium (V) and other alloying elements within the limits specified by the applicable material standard.

Chromium, molybdenum and vanadium contribute to the material's mechanical properties and high-pressure performance. Material suitability for specific service conditions depends on operating conditions, design requirements and applicable project specifications.

Heat treatment is performed according to the applicable material specification, qualified manufacturing procedures and purchaser requirements. Heat treatment is performed as specified for the material grade and applicable ASTM standard, including normalizing, tempering, or quenching where required. Actual heat-treatment conditions depend on the applicable material specification, product size, forging process and project requirements.

Manufacturing Process

Raw Material Inspection → Cutting → Forging → Heat Treatment → Machining → Inspection & Testing → Marking → Packing

Forged construction is supplied according to product size, pressure class, manufacturing route and applicable specifications. Hongcheng controls forging accuracy, heat treatment, dimensional tolerances and inspection throughout the manufacturing process to meet applicable standards and purchaser specifications.

FAQs

  • Q:

What is the difference between a branch connection and a forged tee?

    A:

A branch connection is an outlet fitting welded directly to the run pipe, providing a reinforced connection at the branch opening. A forged tee is a complete three-way forged component with the branch integrated into the fitting body. Branch connections are commonly used where a smaller branch is connected to a larger run pipe or where a compact outlet configuration is preferred.

  • Q:

What materials are available for branch connections?

    A:

Branch connections can be manufactured from carbon steel (ASTM A105, ASTM A350 LF2) and alloy steel (ASTM A182 F11, ASTM A182 F22, ASTM A182 F91). Material selection should be confirmed against the applicable design code and project specifications.

  • Q:

What post-weld heat treatment is required for branch connections?

    A:

PWHT may be required depending on the applicable construction code, wall thickness, welding procedure and project requirements. Where welding is required, branch connections should be welded using qualified procedures with preheating and PWHT applied as required by the applicable code and project specifications.

  • Q:

What types of branch connections are available?

    A:

Branch connections are commonly supplied as Weldolets (butt-weld), Sockolets (socket-weld), Threadolets (threaded), Elbolets (on elbows) and Latrolets (lateral branch connections). Custom configurations can be manufactured according to project drawings and specifications.

  • Q:

    What standards are supported?

    A:

Branch connections are dimensionally manufactured in accordance with MSS SP-97 where applicable. Material requirements are specified by the applicable ASTM material standard, while fabrication, welding and inspection requirements are determined by the applicable product specification, piping code and project requirements.
