ASTM A234 WP22 is the wrought alloy steel fitting grade associated with the P22 alloy grade. ASTM A335 P22 applies to seamless ferritic alloy-steel pipe, while ASTM A234 WP22 applies to wrought butt-welding fittings. These grades are commonly specified together in high-temperature and hydrogen-containing service environments, while each product form is controlled by its respective ASTM / ASME material specification.

Concentric Configuration

Material & Heat Treatment
A234 WP22 is a chromium-molybdenum alloy steel grade containing Chromium (Cr), Molybdenum (Mo), Manganese (Mn), Silicon (Si) and Carbon (C) within the limits specified by the applicable material standard.
Chromium and molybdenum contribute to the material's elevated-temperature mechanical properties and resistance to oxidation in applicable service environments. Material suitability for hydrogen service depends on operating conditions, design requirements and applicable project specifications.
Heat treatment is performed according to the applicable ASTM A234 / ASME SA234 requirements, qualified manufacturing procedures and purchaser specifications. Typical processing may include normalizing and tempering. Actual heat-treatment conditions depend on the applicable material specification, product size, manufacturing route and project requirements.
Manufacturing Process
Raw Material Inspection → Cutting → Forming → Heat Treatment → Sizing & Calibration → End Beveling → Inspection & Testing → Marking → Packing
Hot forming or other qualified forming processes may be used according to product size, configuration and manufacturing requirements. Where welding is involved, welding and applicable PWHT are performed according to qualified welding procedures and project requirements.
Hongcheng controls forming, heat treatment, dimensional accuracy and inspection throughout the manufacturing process to meet applicable standards and purchaser specifications.

What is the difference between WP22 and P22?
WP22 and P22 refer to related grades within the same chromium-molybdenum alloy grade, but they are specified under different ASTM product standards. ASTM A335 P22 is used for seamless alloy steel pipe, while ASTM A234 WP22 is used for wrought butt-welding fittings. They are commonly used together in high-temperature and hydrogen-containing service environments.
Why is a concentric reducer used instead of an eccentric reducer?
A concentric reducer has aligned centerlines, providing a symmetrical transition that maintains uniform flow characteristics. It is commonly selected for vertical piping runs, steam lines and applications where fluid accumulation is not a concern.
What post-weld heat treatment is required for WP22 reducers?
