ASTM A234 WP5 Bulbous Tee

ASTM A234 WP5 Bulbous Tee is a 5Cr-0.5Mo chromium-molybdenum alloy steel butt weld fitting manufactured to ASTM A234 / ASME SA234, with butt-welding ends and applicable dimensional requirements based on ASME B16.9 and project specifications.

Product Overview

ASTM A234 WP5 Bulbous Tee is a 5Cr-0.5Mo chromium-molybdenum alloy steel butt weld fitting manufactured to ASTM A234 / ASME SA234, with butt-welding ends and applicable dimensional requirements based on ASME B16.9 and project specifications. Hongcheng manufactures and supplies WP5 Bulbous Tees in equal and reducing configurations for refinery heater outlets, hydrogenation units, reformer systems and other high-sulfur, high-temperature process piping. Custom sizes, wall thicknesses and branch configurations are available according to project requirements.

Based on a 5Cr-0.5Mo alloy system, WP5 Bulbous Tees provide good resistance to high-temperature sulfidation and oxidation and are widely selected for demanding refinery and petrochemical applications. The enlarged central body (bulbous section) provides additional wall thickness and stress distribution, improving resistance to thermal fatigue and cyclic loading. Material suitability for hydrogen-containing service depends on operating conditions and project requirements. Hongcheng supplies ASTM A234 WP5 Bulbous Tees in normalized and tempered condition, with full material traceability, inspection documentation and project-specific technical support.

Material & Heat Treatment

ASTM A234 WP5 belongs to the same 5Cr-0.5Mo alloy system used for ASTM A335 P5 seamless pipe and ASTM A182 F5 forgings. These grades are commonly used together in hydrogenation, reforming and high-sulfur process piping systems, while each product form is governed by its respective ASTM / ASME material specification.

Key alloying elements include: Chromium (Cr), Molybdenum (Mo), Manganese (Mn), Silicon (Si), Carbon (C).

Chromium provides oxidation and sulfidation resistance, while molybdenum enhances high-temperature strength and hydrogen attack resistance.

Typical heat treatment includes:

• Normalizing: according to the applicable material specification and qualified heat-treatment procedure

• Tempering: 675°C minimum for normalized and tempered condition

Actual heat treatment parameters are controlled according to the applicable edition of ASTM A234 / ASME SA234, qualified manufacturing procedures and purchaser requirements. Heat treatment parameters are controlled according to ASTM A234, ASME SA234, manufacturing procedures and customer project specifications.

Manufacturing Process

Steel Billet / Forging Stock → Heating → Hot Forming (Bulbous Section) → Sizing & Calibration → Normalizing & Tempering → UT & MT Inspection → Beveling → Marking → Packing

Hongcheng applies strict manufacturing controls throughout forming, heat treatment and inspection processes to ensure dimensional accuracy, material integrity and consistent performance of every WP5 Bulbous Tee, with special attention to the bulbous section geometry and wall thickness transition.

FAQs

  • Q:

What is the difference between WP5 and WP22?

    A:

WP5 has a higher chromium content than WP22 and is widely selected for high-temperature sulfidation-resistant refinery service. WP22, with its 2.25Cr-1Mo composition, is commonly used for other high-temperature and high-pressure applications. Material selection for hydrogen service depends on the specific operating conditions and project requirements.

  • Q:

What post-weld heat treatment is required for WP5?

    A:

PWHT may be required for WP5 piping systems depending on the applicable construction code, wall thickness, welding procedure and project requirements. WP5 welding requires qualified procedures, controlled preheating and appropriate post-weld heat treatment where specified.

  • Q:

What temperature is WP5 Bulbous Tee suitable for?

    A:

WP5 is designed for high-temperature service and is widely used in hydrogen-containing and high-sulfur environments. Actual allowable service conditions depend on the applicable design code, pressure, wall thickness, material condition and project specifications.

  • Q:

Can custom branch sizes and bulbous geometry be supplied?

    A:

Yes. Hongcheng can manufacture custom WP5 Bulbous Tees according to customer drawings and technical specifications, including custom bulbous section geometry, wall thickness transition and branch configurations.

  • Q:

    What standards are supported?

    A:

Products can be manufactured according to ASTM A234, ASME SA234, ASME B16.9 and ASME B16.25.
